WHY IKRAR COUNSEL

A Practice Built on Careful Attention

Appointed Practitioners

Both a Notary Public and a Commissioner for Oaths appointed under the relevant Malaysian rules — so your document carries the correct attestation for its intended destination.

Document Review Included

Before attestation, each document is reviewed for technical issues — missing jurat elements, unclear exhibit references, or jurisdiction-specific form requirements — so problems surface before, not after, submission.

Short-Notice Availability

Appointments are offered at short notice where practitioner availability permits. Priority consideration is given to court-filing deadlines and time-sensitive overseas submissions.

End-to-End Coordination

For documents travelling abroad, we coordinate MoFA attestation and consular legalisation, tracking each bundle through its stages so clients do not need to navigate multiple government counters alone.

Jurisdiction-Specific Certificates

Notarial certificates are prepared in the form expected by the receiving jurisdiction. Different countries require different formats; this detail matters when a foreign authority reviews the document.

Preparatory Guidance

Each confirmed appointment comes with a preparatory note detailing what to bring, how the document should be presented, and whether any supporting materials are needed — reducing wasted visits.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Questions We Often Receive

What is the difference between a Notary Public and a Commissioner for Oaths in Malaysia?
A Commissioner for Oaths is appointed under the Commissioner for Oaths Rules to administer oaths and attest affidavits and statutory declarations for use within Malaysia — most often for court proceedings and regulatory submissions. A Notary Public is appointed under a separate instrument and exercises broader powers, including the attestation of documents intended for use and recognition outside Malaysia. If your document is headed abroad, a Notary Public attestation is generally required.
My document is going to a country that is party to the Hague Apostille Convention. What does that mean for legalisation?
Following Malaysia's accession to the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation (the Apostille Convention), documents intended for Convention member states may be authenticated by obtaining an apostille certificate rather than proceeding through the traditional chain of MoFA attestation and consular legalisation. We can advise you on the applicable process for your destination country and manage the apostille application on your behalf.
How long does the notarial process typically take?
The appointment itself is generally brief — typically 30 to 45 minutes — once the document is in the form required and you have attended with the appropriate identity documents. The downstream steps (MoFA attestation, consular legalisation, apostille) are subject to the processing times of the relevant government bodies, which we will outline for you at the time of engagement.
What should I bring to my appointment?
When we confirm your appointment, we will send you a preparatory note specific to your document type. Generally, you should bring the original document (unsigned, unless the form requires prior signature before attendance), your original MyKad or passport, and any supporting exhibits or attachments referenced in the document. For corporate documents, the relevant resolutions and company documents will also be required.
Can appointments be arranged at short notice for court deadlines?
We extend priority consideration to matters with court-filing deadlines. Please contact us by telephone (+60 3-4826 3175) directly for time-sensitive matters, and we will advise on the earliest available appointment slot.
Do you handle corporate documents, or only personal ones?
Both. Common corporate engagements include authenticated board resolutions, powers of attorney granted by companies, certificate of origin attestations, and contract attestations for cross-border commercial arrangements. We review the form expected by the receiving jurisdiction before proceeding.
